Question 1

Can squirrel poop look exactly like rat poop?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, yes. A large squirrel and a small roof rat can leave pellets that look nearly identical in a photo, especially if you only find a few. That's why I look at where the droppings are, how they're arranged, and what else is nearby, like gnaw marks, nests, and noises. If you're still unsure, a technician can usually tell within minutes on site.

Question 2

Can you identify a squirrel or rat from one dropping?

Accepted Answer

Not reliably in every case. A single pellet can provide clues about size, shape, and age, but squirrel and rat droppings overlap enough that one dropping may not be conclusive. The location, distribution, entry point, sounds, gnaw marks, and nesting material around it can make the identification much more reliable.

Question 3

Is rat poop more dangerous than squirrel poop?

Accepted Answer

For household contamination, rat droppings generally deserve extra attention when they're found around kitchens, food storage, or living areas. But squirrel droppings shouldn't be treated as harmless, especially when there is substantial contamination in an attic or other enclosed space. Either type should be cleaned up carefully using a wet method rather than sweeping or vacuuming it dry.

Question 4

What does fresh squirrel poop look like?

Accepted Answer

Fresh squirrel droppings are usually tan to dark brown, smooth, and rounded with blunt ends. They darken or lighten depending on diet and fade to a drier, paler look as they age. Fresh or moist droppings indicate relatively recent activity, but they don't prove the squirrel is still inside. Look for additional fresh signs over the next day or two, along with sounds, tracks, nesting activity, or an active entry point.

Question 5

How can I tell if rat droppings are old or new?

Accepted Answer

Fresh rat droppings are dark and often look slightly shiny and soft. Old ones are dry, dull, gray, and crumbly. New droppings in the same spot over several days mean the activity is current.

Question 6

Could the droppings be from a mouse instead?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Mouse droppings are much smaller, about the size of a grain of rice, with pointed ends. If your pellets are clearly tiny, think mice rather than rats or squirrels.

Question 7

What's the safest way to clean up droppings in my attic?

Accepted Answer

Ventilate first, then wear gloves and a mask. Soak the droppings with disinfectant, let them sit, wipe them up with paper towels, and bag everything. Never sweep or vacuum dry droppings. For anything beyond a small amount, or if there's insulation involved, bring in a professional.

Question 8

Should I clean up droppings before or after removing the animal?

Accepted Answer

Don't leave contaminated material sitting around unnecessarily. For a small amount of accessible contamination, clean it using the appropriate wet-cleaning method while taking precautions. At the same time, identify how the animal is getting inside and address the entry point once you know the animal is no longer using it. If there is extensive contamination, nesting material, or contaminated insulation, consider professional cleanup and exclusion rather than trying to handle everything at once.

Question 9

Why are squirrel droppings in my attic?

Accepted Answer

Squirrel droppings in an attic usually mean the animal has found an entry point and is using the space for shelter, nesting, or both. Check roofline openings such as soffits, fascia gaps, vents, and other exterior openings, then look for nesting material and daytime activity that support the identification.
