Question 1

Why are squirrels only eating part of my tomatoes?

Accepted Answer

Squirrels may take a bite or two from several tomatoes and leave the rest behind, which can cause considerable damage even when little fruit is actually eaten. However, partial bites aren't proof that squirrels are responsible. Look for other clues, such as daytime activity and repeated damage to ripening fruit, before choosing a control method.

Question 2

What smell do squirrels hate the most?

Accepted Answer

There isn't one smell that reliably keeps every squirrel away. Peppermint, garlic, and hot-pepper scents are commonly used in squirrel repellents, but results vary, especially outdoors where rain and weather can weaken their effects. Some products may discourage squirrel activity temporarily, but scent alone is unlikely to protect ripe tomatoes from a determined squirrel. If you try a repellent, choose one labeled for the intended outdoor use and follow its instructions. For dependable protection, use a secure physical barrier.

Question 3

Does cayenne pepper keep squirrels away from tomatoes?

Accepted Answer

Cayenne pepper is a popular home remedy for deterring squirrels, but it isn't a dependable way to protect tomatoes. Rain and wind can quickly reduce its effect, and pepper can irritate the eyes and skin of people and animals. Avoid sprinkling it directly on tomatoes or applying homemade pepper mixtures to edible plants without confirming that the ingredients and application are appropriate. A secure netting enclosure or fully enclosed wire cage provides more reliable protection.

Question 4

Do squirrels eat green tomatoes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Squirrels often target ripening fruit, but they can also chew green tomatoes. If green fruit is being damaged, don't assume thirst is the cause. Check for squirrels and other possible culprits, then protect the plants with a secure cage or netting. Early harvesting helps with mature fruit, but it won't solve every case of green-tomato damage.

Question 5

How do I protect tomatoes in pots or containers?

Accepted Answer

Cover container-grown tomatoes with a small, supported cage or netting enclosure, and secure the opening so squirrels can't climb underneath. A rigid mesh cover over the soil can also reduce digging, provided it doesn't damage stems or interfere with watering. Keep the enclosure high enough that squirrels can't reach through to the fruit, and check that nearby railings, fences, or branches don't provide an easy route inside.

Question 6

Will getting rid of squirrels solve the problem for good?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Other squirrels may continue visiting if your yard offers easy food or convenient access to the garden. Instead of trying to eliminate every squirrel, protect the tomatoes with a secure barrier and reduce the food sources that make your yard attractive. That approach is more practical than relying on a one-time removal or deterrent.

Question 7

Does garden netting really keep squirrels off tomatoes?

Accepted Answer

Garden netting can help when it's supported on a sturdy frame, secured at every edge, and fitted closely enough to prevent squirrels from reaching through. Loose netting draped directly over the plants is less reliable because squirrels may reach the fruit through it or enter through gaps. Inspect the netting regularly for tears and trapped wildlife. For persistent damage, a rigid, fully enclosed wire cage is often the more dependable option.

Question 8

Do fake owls keep squirrels away from tomatoes?

Accepted Answer

Fake owls may startle squirrels temporarily, but they aren't a dependable way to protect a tomato crop. Squirrels can become accustomed to stationary decoys, especially when ripe fruit remains easy to reach. If you already own one, you can move it occasionally, but don't rely on it alone. Secured netting or a fully enclosed wire cage offers more dependable protection.
